Roma & The Favourite lead Oscar race

Roma 1

Regal romp The Favourite and black and white drama Roma are the frontrunners in this year’s Oscar race with 10 nominations each.
The films, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and Alfonso Cuaron respectively, are in the running for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress among others.
Running them close is Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Vice, both with eight, though Cooper is surprisingly omitted from the Director category.
Brit wise, Olivia Colman is leading the charge for Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite against the likes of Glenn Close, Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy and Yalitza Aparicio, with Christian Bale eyeing his second Oscar after The Fighter, taking on Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Rami Malek and Viggo Mortensen.
Rachel Weisz meanwhile is in the Best Supporting Actress category, taking on fellow Favourite actress Emma Stone, as well as Amy Adams, Regina King and Marina de Tavira, with Richard E Grant getting his first Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Grant is taking on Adam Driver, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell and Sam Elliott.
Elsewhere comic book caper Black Panther rounds off an incredible campaign to be the first superhero movie to be nominated for not just one Oscar, but seven!
Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman, which saw the veteran filmmaker garner his first director nom, follows with six nominations, and Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book close behind on five.
The Oscars will take place on Sunday 24th February at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and will not have a specific host this year.
