All smiles for Joker, as DC villain tops UK chart

Iconic villain Joker topped the UK chart on debut, taking an impressive £12.5m.

The film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and is not your usual comic book fare, held off all its rivals including fellow newcomer Judy, starring Renee Zellweger as troubled Hollywood star Judy Garland, which opened in second place with £2m.

That left former supremo Downton Abbey usurped, and slipping down to third, with Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers in fourth.

Brad Pitt’s space epic Ad Astra seems to be running out of juice down in fifth, with chart favourite The Lion King still hanging around in sixth, now in its 12thweek.

Warner horror It: Chapter Two slunk away in seventh, while Indian thriller War opened in eighth with £345k.

Family adventure Dora And The Lost City Of Gold and comedy horror Ready Or Not starring Samara Weaving, complete the top ten.

Altitude’s music doc Hitsville: The Making Of Motown opened in 12thwith £235k.
