Joaquin Phoenix has last laugh, as Joker tops US
The latest comic book adaptation, Joker, exploded into top spot in the US Box Office Chart.
The distinctly un-comic-like film, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, nabbed £93.5m on debut, utterly destroying its rivals.
A poor second saw animation Abominable pick up a further $12m, with poncy pic Downton Abbey in third.
Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers slipped down the pole to fourth, with creepy clown Pennywise masking his dismay as It: Chapter Two slumped down to fifth.
Brad Pitt’s Ad Astra continued to float around the chart in sixth, while Oscar potential Judy hit the right notes rising to seventh.
Sly’s Rambo took another hit as Last Blood crashed to eighth, with comedy Good Boys, starring Jacob Tremblay, and new entry, Chinese drama, My People, My Country completing the top ten.
