No surprise that the force is strong with Star Wars in US
Opening week proved to be a bit of a cake walk, or should that be skywalk, for the latest Star Wars which surged straight to the top of the US Chart.
The latest and indeed last instalment in the sage took a whopping $175.5m in its first week, easy debuting in top spot, but actually almost $45m down on The Last Jedi’s debut.
That left The Rock’s ego bruised as Jumanji: The Next Level rolled down to second spot, with Disney musical extravaganza Frozen II sliding to third, despite having taken $386m domestically.
Fourth spot went to disappointing new entry Cats, directed by Tom Hooper and starring Jennifer Hudson and Idris Elba, which took a cat-ass-trophic $6.5m on debut.
Whodunit Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig, carved out its position in fifth, with another new entry in sixth in the form of Bombshell, starring Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie, which opened with $5m.
Elsewhere Clint Eastwood’s drama Richard Jewell crashed to seventh, with Daniel Kaluuya drama Queen & Slim dipping to eighth, while horror Black Christmas and motor-racing drama Ford vs Ferrari complete the top ten.
