Sonic speeds past competitors at US Box Office

'90’s icon, Sonic The Hedgehog raced past its rivals in its opening weekend in the US.

The prickly character racked up $57m on debut, making it the highest video game to movie conversion of all time, and dwarfing its closest competitor, Harley Quinn’s Bids Of Prey dropping down into second with just $17m.

Third spot saw another new entry in the form of a Fantasy Island reboot starring Maggie Q, which took $12.4m despite some mixed reviews, while fellow newcomer The Photograph, featuring LaKeith Stanfield, opened in fourth with $12.2m.

Will Smith’s Bad Boys For Life lost ground, dropping down to fifth, with the acclaimed World War 1 1917 falling to sixth.

The Jumanji sequel drops a level to seventh, while Oscar-winner Parasite moves up to eighth – the fifth highest grossing foreign language film in North America.

Robert Downey Jr’s Dolittle and new entry Downhill, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss debuted in 10thwith a disappointing $4.6m.
