US cinemagoers went in their droves to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife on its opening weekend.

The film grossed a whopping $44m in its first week, dwarfing Marvel’s Eternals, which had to make do in second spot.

Clifford The Big Red Dog lay down in third place, while Will Smith’ tour de force as King Richard opened in fourth with $5.7m.

Denis Villeneuve’s epic Dune slipped to fifth as it approaches $100m domestically, while Tom Hardy’s Venom 2 passed the $200m mark in sixth.

Elsewhere Bond slipped down the rankings to seventh, with Wes Anderson’s whimsical The French Dispatch settling for eighth. Kenneth Branagh’s charming autobiographical Belfast and animation Ron’s Gone Wrong complete the top ten.
