US audiences wowed by Captain Marvel
Marvel’s latest superhero movie, Captain Marvel, destroyed all opposition in its opening weekend.
The Brie Larson fronted movie took a remarkable $153m in its opening, week, and $455m globally, putting it on course to potentially topple DC’s Wonder Woman.
Second spot, and a distant runner up at that, was previous incumbent the animation How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which took a further $14.7m, with Tyler Perry A Madea Family Funeral in third.
The LEGO Movie 2 continued to build on its success in fourth, taking its overall tally to $97m.
Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron collaboration Alita: Battle Angel dips to fifth, with Peter Farrelly’s Oscar-winning Green Book in sixth, and Rebel Wilson rom com Isn’t It Romantic in seventh.
Elsewhere wrestling comedy drama Fighting With My Family, starring Florence Pugh and Dwayne Johnson, Isabelle Huppert’s sinister Greta and documentary Apollo 11 complete the top ten.
