Venom proves poison of choice for UK cinemagoers
Comic book character Venom showed it teeth in the UK this weekend, after topping the UK Box Office with £8m.
Starring Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams, the Sony release defied the critics to open in top spot, with almost double the take of Johnny English in second spot.
In a third outing, Johnny English Strikes Again, Rowan Atkinson’s asinine agent opened in second with £4.1m, just fractionally ahead of Oscar-bait A Star Is Born, directed and starring Bradley Cooper, with Lady Gaga as the lead.
Fantastical fun The House With A Clock On Its Walls, starring Cate Blanchett and Jack Black, slipped to fourth, while last week’s leader Night School flunked class after crashing to fifth.
Paul Feig’s rich dark comedy came in at six, with The Met Opera’s Aida opening in seventh.
Elsewhere rom com sensation Crazy Rich Asians, chiller thriller The Nun and Glenn Close drama The Wife all complete the UK chart.
